Blechnum fraseri
Miniature Tree Fern / Maukurangi
ABOUT:
The name Blechnum comes from a Greek term for fern, and fraseri commemorates Scottish botanist Charles Fraser.
IDENTIFY:
1m x 5m, colony-forming. Like a tree fern, but with trunks no greater than 1 inch. Fronds are glossy, and hairless above and below. Leaflets run almost to the base of the stems like little green wings.
USE:
Great for a lush native feel in cool shaded areas. Well suited to a planted office foyer where air-conditioning keeps temperatures down.
PLANT:
Suits clay sites with shade or dappled light. Prefers cool. Can spread rapidly, but hard to establish.
